The Color Of My Love, A Coney Island Engagement

A love story that comes with challenges and proof that when a couple is willing to fight the odds together, anything is possible.  With wedding photographer, Mariel of Mariel Hannah Photography, by their side, we get to see moments of passion and grace unfold as their love is documented around meaningful locations.  With courage and determination, this bride fought through a newly discovered neurological disorder to be present by her fiancés side for their engagement photos.  Every location providing it’s owns peaks and valley’s of obstacles, Mariel and their team worked hard to create authentic moments around the challenges for this couple.

From The Couple…

Vince and I began dating when we were students at Williams College. Over the past ten years, we’ve shared lots of “adventures”: graduations, vacations abroad, service trips to developing countries, and lots of trips between New York (where Vince lives and works) and Boston (where I moved for law school and currently live and work). In fact, the week that Vince proposed, he made a one-day mid-week trip to Boston with my family to attend my swearing-in ceremony and watch me officially achieve my dream of becoming an attorney. So when Vince called me the next day and asked me to make a last-minute trip to New York to accompany him to a work fundraiser, I said yes. Little did I know that the ten-hour bus ride (thanks Boston traffic!) was part of the largest adventures of our lives.

We stopped at our favorite cocktail bar to get a drink and a bite to eat before the fundraiser. Our favorite spot at the bar had just opened up, we sat down and said hello to the bartenders we’ve befriended through the years. When I flipped the page on the menu, I was so stunned to see a drink called “Marry Me Nichole.” I slowly began to realize that I was not dreaming. When I finally collected myself, Vince made a joke of my laughter, got down on his knee and asked me if I would be his wife. The bar erupted in applause when I said yes. When I turned around, I saw my parents and my sister; in fact, Vince had arranged for my friends and family to travel from all over the world to be there to celebrate with us. It was by far the most magical evening of my life and an incredible week filled with milestones.

More from the couple…

It’s no surprise, that when it came time to pick locations for our engagement session, that bar, the Clover Club, was at the top of our list. We also wanted photos at our favorite park and at Coney Island, where we went on dates during our first summers home from college. We were overjoyed that Mariel enthusiastically embraced our vision, even though it meant traveling across the country to trek all over Brooklyn in the summer heat to experience our favorite places in our favorite borough.

Continued…

Then, one month before the engagement session, I developed a debilitating neurological disorder that required around-the-clock care, made traveling nearly impossible without a wheelchair and help sitting, standing, and walking. We contemplated cancelling or rescheduling the session, but with the help of family and our incredible team of vendors, we were able to make it happen. In fact, Mariel, Tatiana of Whimsy Weddings (our wedding planner), and JoAnn Solomon (the makeup artist) helped make that day one of the most magical days for us since we got engaged. Whimsy Weddings made sure we had an incredible bouquet and even delivered it to the park so we would have it before we headed out to Coney Island, our last location! Mariel (and her husband Abe) were incredible at helping Vince and I feel relaxed and be ourselves. They even found creative ways to make sure that I didn’t have to stand very long and that my wheelchair and cane were disguised in all of the photos. I feel truly lucky to have such gorgeous keepsakes and memories from that day. They’ve been encouragement while I work to overcome my neurological disorder, and remind me that no matter the obstacles that I face on the wedding day, we will be in great hands. We cannot wait until our wedding day.
