Inspirational Vow Renewal Shoot

Photographed and Designed by A. Thomas Photography

When wedding photographer Abigail Thomas shared this inspirational shoot with us, it was quite clear that she had really taken the time to create a coherent story with a clear objective; to emphasize the naked strength and romance of the vows that two people take for each other.  A vow is defined as a solemn promise. From a young age we all know what the word ‘promise’ means and as children, we usually say it to our parents, almost as an automatic response when we’ve been caught up to no good. Sometimes we just throw it out there without really understanding that we have just committed ourselves to something that should, by definition, last indefinitely. The reality is, that we all have broken promises in the past, it’s part of being human, we learn our lessons and then move on: the word vow however connotes something deeper, something binding, something endless. A commitment made in stone.

In thi inspirational shoot, Shelby & Eric (our couple) truly understand the importance of their vows, and we are thrilled to share their story and Abigail’s vision with you here, enjoy.

From Abigail Thomas

The inspiration for the shoot came from the landscape that we were surrounded with at Montana de Oro State Park in San Luis Obispo, California. The rugged rocks in the cove are offset by the inherent grace of the ocean flowing behind them. Shelby’s gown from Something Bridal perfectly captured the sea breeze, and the incredible bouquet crafted by Wilder Floral Co. was a star in its own right. Amanda Olson created a hair and makeup look that blends with the effortless ease that a bride would be looking for to renew her vows to her partner. Rachel Brewer created an invitation suite that captures the natural elements of the surroundings, while also highlighting the romance of a lifelong commitment. The day was concluded with an intimate picnic of wine, berries, and assorted appetizers perfect for two.

As a wedding photographer, there is something so immensely romantic about the renewal of vows. To me, it is proof that a couple is going to continue to choose to say yes to one another, every single day. Shelby & Eric Maldanado are a real couple who have been married for a little over two years, & have a sweet son, Asa, who is now 8 months. When I asked Shelby to be a part of this inspirational shoot, she told me that any occasion to celebrate her marriage to Eric is always one she wants to be a part of.

When I asked Shelby how her marriage had changed since Asa’s birth, she responded, “watching Eric be a dad to our son has caused me to fall in love with him in a whole new way. Walking through this new season as parents has been an incredible adventure so far.” When a couple chooses one another, day after day, the magic is already there and I am honored I was chosen to capture it.
